ATTENDANCE

Vacations taken during the regular school session are strongly discouraged. Parents are urged to try to plan for their children to be in school except in the case of illness. A significant part of a student's educational success is derived from classroom participation, activities, discussion and relationships. Daily attendance is essential. Make-up work is not a substitute for instruction received in the classroom.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

At Wyco Drive Elementary, we feel that is very important to your child’s learning that he/she is here at school daily. The State of Colorado (C.R.S. 22-33-104) and Adams 12 School District Superintendent Policy (Code 5113) address the issue of attendance for students. An absence is defined as the non-attendance of a student in one or more class periods during the day. An absence is considered to be excused if the absence is for the following reasons:

  • Illness, injury or physical/emotional disability (a doctor’s excuse may be required for extended absences).
  • Religious observances generally recognized by an established religious organization.
  • Family emergencies or hardship.
  • Absence required by a legal body (court, juvenile authorities or police).

(Policy 5113 2.5.5) Frequent absences and tardies are a serious concern. When students are frequently absent their academic progress and achievement is negatively affected . A formal conference will be established by the school to deal with excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused. For our purposes, we consider excessive absences to be more than 10 absences in a year. Our goal is to attain and maintain an attendance rate of 95% or above. If a student is absent for more than ten days in a year, corrective action will be taken.

Attendance Procedures for Wyco Drive Elementary

  1. The classroom teacher maintains daily and trimester attendance cards in order to facilitate a “checks and balances” system of accuracy with the office.
  2. The classroom teacher makes parent contact after four (4) absences or six (6) tardies per trimester. The teacher documents the contact.
  3. The office will keep daily attendance records and print monthly attendance reports, highlighting concerns for the teacher and principal.
  4. The teacher sends a letter of concern after seven (7) absences or twelve (12) tardies within the school year. A copy of the letter is given to the principal and placed in the student’s file. If there are additional absences or tardies, the principal sends a letter of concern stating that a doctor’s note is required for any further absences.
  5. If the attendance continues to be a concern, the Attendance Review Committee (ARC) will meet to determine if an attendance plan is needed. The ARC will consist of the principal and appropriate school and/or district personnel. The committee will take into consideration the reasons for absences and/or tardies. If the absences are excused and the absences are not negatively affecting the student’s academics, close monitoring will take place. If a plan is needed, the principal will contact the parent, guardian or legal custodian and a conference time will be scheduled.
  6. If the plan is not adhered to, one of the following may be contacted:

Social Services (Under 10 years old, possible educational neglect)

Adams County Court (Over 10 years old)

District Hearing Officer (In district family involvement)

For further information regarding attendance and attendance procedures, please refer to the district attendance policy in the School District Twelve Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for Parents and Students.

We appreciate your cooperation in making sure your child attends school regularly and for notifying the school when your child does need to be absent.
